Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim commented on the devastating Khidirpur market fire, stating that the market had come under the jurisdiction of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation only three years ago and was never built in a planned manner. His remarks came as authorities continued to probe the cause of the fire.
Speaking to the media, Hakim said, “The entire market was set up haphazardly, which made rescue operations difficult. The source of the fire is still under investigation.”
He further mentioned that due to the market’s unplanned structure, issues related to fire safety and evacuation had long been a concern. However, immediate focus remains on relief and compensation for affected shopkeepers and identifying lapses that led to the incident.
The mayor also reiterated that the administration is working closely with fire and police departments to ascertain how the blaze started and to take steps to prevent such disasters in future.
